We are all accountable for our behavior and for the consequences of our actions. This blog post is not about whether a person is responsible for his or her actions. It's about a perspective and approach to prevent people from being inclined to choose rape as an option.
I have never met anyone who told me that they didn't know rape is not legal, that it is not a lawful option. We have pretty much figured out that laws aren't effective at stopping rape. It might be a minor deterrent, and the fact that a deterrent is needed tells us that we're on the wrong track. The opportunity and cure is to address the dis-ease that might trigger a human being to pursue to violate another human being. Rape is an outcry, a symptom of the condition of a human being. We all know that rape is not about sex. It's about feeling powerless, as if we don't make a difference, that we are not appreciated, not valued, and not respected. Rape is a tantrum and futile desperate pursuit to feel powerful, accepted, appreciated, loved and respected by force. The question is, "How do we teach 'young boys' that rape is not an option?" Answer: Love and respect our children, acknowledge and inspire the contributions they make. Demonstrate that they are great and that they make a difference with you and the world. Love causes love. Love and rape can't happen in the same time and space. When we love our children and each other, we humans are less likely to become rapists and rape each other. Namaste,
